Portuguese photovoltaic market promises growth
In 2019, Portugal set the foundations for a mature solar market. – That is, the conclusion of a global team of correspondents and editors of the renowned pv Magazine. At the beginning of this year, international experts highlighted 10 fast-growing photovoltaic markets to assess the opportunities and possible risks, including Portugal.
In particular, the photovoltaic auction held in 2019 was considered a success, as it provided the lowest bid in the world, and 1.15 GW of allocated capacity. Another positive point is the new rules for distributed generation systems, which include provisions for communities and energy storage.
The size of the Portuguese solar market was considered an adverse fact. With around 784 MW of photovoltaic capacity registered online at the end of September 2019, the market still remains limited.
However, in 2020, market observers expect the implementation of a few hundred megawatts in new photovoltaic plants. These new plants are mainly the result of large-scale PPAs, which were agreed in 2019.
Two more solar energy auctions to be held in 2020 were announced by the Portuguese Government. The solar panel projects and installations originating from this auction will probably not be perceptible yet this year.
