Photovoltaic project in Portugal: 7 reasons for your company to invest
Competitiveness and sustainability: these are the main benefits of a photovoltaic project. By reducing energy consumption from the grid and CO2 emissions, a photovoltaic project saves money and protects the environment. And these factors are decisive for the success of any company. But there are more reasons to invest in a photovoltaic project in Portugal.
7 reasons why your company should invest in a photovoltaic project:
-1-
Reduction in energy bills. How? Your company starts to consume the energy it produces and therefore substantially reduces the consumption of energy from the network. This is called self-consumption. A correctly sized and managed photovoltaic project allows a company to self-consume between 70 to 100% of the energy produced by the system. Thus, your company gains more autonomy, by depending less and less on the energy network.
-2-
Reduction of CO2 emissions, as you are using a renewable energy that does not emit carbon or chemical residues. This sustainable vision contributes to the decarbonisation goals and also to the image of your company as a sustainable business.
-3-
The sun is an abundant energy source in Portugal. There is sunshine all year round in most parts of the country, especially from April to August. This will allow greater energy production and, consequently, lower consumption from the grid and greater savings.
-4-
Greater knowledge of your consumption profile, as you can monitor in real time the production of the panels and know what the savings are. This knowledge can provide better decisions regarding your company’s current and future investments.
-5-
Access to incentives for the use of renewable energies. With professional advice you can get information on how to use this support in the most efficient way, so you can focus on your business while the experts take care of it..
-6-
return of the investment in few years and practically zero maintenance costs.
-7-
Durability of the solar panels, since the useful life of the solar panels is approximately 25 years.
How to ensure that your company gets the most benefit from a photovoltaic project?
The most important thing is to ensure that the photovoltaic system to be implemented is correctly sized and suited to your company’s needs. There are three photovoltaic installation options, namely:
- UPAC (Self-Consumption Production Unit) which allows you to produce and consume your own energy. Therefore, partially or totally replacing the energy that you usually buy from the grid.
- UPP (Small Production Unit) which produces and sells energy to the grid. This model is based on the principle that all energy from a renewable energy source is injected into the Public Service Electricity Network (RESP) and the connection power is limited to 1 MW.
The analysis of the size of each company, its energy consumption profile and its investment capacity will enable it to make the appropriate choice of the photovoltaic project installation scheme.
Photovoltaic project: Let’s do the maths!
The cost of a photovoltaic project is variable and is based on the specific needs of each company. The energy savings achieved allow the company’s fixed costs to be reduced and thus contribute to increased profitability. There is also the possibility of using an external investor, which facilitates the project.
With abundant sunshine, Portugal is a country with ideal conditions to implement photovoltaic projects. For example, in Lisbon, there are nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. This means that a photovoltaic solar system can obtain specific productions between 1,550 and 1,600 kWh/(kWp/year). In other words, 1 kWp installed will produce on average 1,575 kWh/year which, if self-consumed, easily corresponds to 200 euros per year.
In most companies, consumption takes place during the day, in line with the hours of solar production, representing auto-consumption quotas of over 70%. Thus, it is possible to obtain financial returns in around 4 years.
